POPPY

The Pygmy Hippo

Hi, Poppy!

Hippo hooray! Introducing Poppy, the zoo’s newest and most adorable addition to our animal family.

She was born on December 9, 2024, to parents Iris and Corwin, and she can now be seen at the zoo. Pygmy hippos are endangered, so this birth is important!

Poppy is America’s pygmy hippo princess. She’s raising awareness for her species by stealing hearts on the internet across the world.

Live Poppy Cam

Meet Poppy

Poppy has made her public debut and can now be seen on habitat at Hippo Haven any day the zoo is open. Check zoo hours first!

Guests can also schedule a behind-the-scenes experience to meet Iris and Poppy up-close!

The 30-minute experience includes:

  • A guided behind-the-scenes tour of the indoor pool area of the Hippo Haven habitat
  • Wading into the water near Iris and Poppy with a safe barrier in between (waders provided)
  • Potential opportunities to feed produce to Iris and Poppy
  • Learning more about pygmy hippo behavior and conservation from a zoo team member

This one-of-a-kind experience is only being offered for a short time, and capacity is limited. Online reservations are required.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit pygmy hippos in the wild.
