One of Richmond’s favorite holiday events is back for its 20th season. After being presented virtually for the past two years, The Miracle of Christmas – Live at the Zoo is returning for in-person performances on December 20, 21, and 22. All are invited and welcome to attend.
The Miracle of Christmas offers a reenactment of the Christmas story presented with live animals and set against a period-appropriate backdrop with cast members recreating events that took place more than 2,000 years ago. Zoo animals — including Bactrian camels, donkeys, sheep, and goats — are featured in the program and contribute to the unique and authentic experience. Baby goats and lambs were born earlier this month in preparation for the nativity, and they were moved to the stable with their mothers last week.
The twenty-minute pageant is presented 3 times each evening at 7:00, 7:45, and 8:30 PM. Zoo gates open at 6:15 PM. Admission and parking are FREE. The nativity takes place outdoors at the entrance of the Metro Richmond Zoo (8300 Beaver Bridge Road, Moseley, VA 23120), and visitors should be dressed appropriately for the weather. On the days of the event, the zoo closes early at 4:00 PM to prepare for the show.
Doughnuts and hot chocolate are on sale to raise funds for local charities. As well, we are hosting a canned food drive for Chesterfield Food Bank to support local families in need. If you’d like to participate, please drop off your non-perishable food in boxes at the zoo entrance during the three nights of Miracle of Christmas.
We are grateful to the hundreds of people who have volunteered their time and talents to bring this pageant back after a two-year hiatus.
