PAY RATE Based on experience (salary starting $40k -$50k)
FULL-TIME/PART-TIME Full-time
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
The Metro Richmond Zoo’s mission is to protect animals through conservation and inspire guests by providing up-close, educational encounters with the wild. The zoo is situated on 150 acres of land and is home to over 2,000 animals representing 190 species from around the world. The zoo is accredited by the Zoological Association of America and is well-known for its conservation programs for cheetahs, African penguins, and Diana monkeys.
POSITION SUMMARY
The HR & operations manager is responsible for hiring all guest services employees, creating their work schedules, and coordinating their training. This manager collaborates with the zoo management team to oversee all general zoo customer service operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Interview, hire, and onboard all guest services employees and interns
- Complete paperwork (including I-9) for all new hires
- Lead orientation for new hires
- Coordinate training of employees with the operations manager
- Oversee the work schedules for 30+ employees
- Conduct employee reviews with all zoo crew members
- Ensure the zoo and all its zones are well-staffed each day
- Review and approve/deny time off requests
- Oversee disciplinary action, including write-ups, formal warnings, and terminations
- Assist the operations manager in leading and managing the zoo’s daily guest operations, including admissions, memberships, gift shop, food services, ride operation, and treetop zoofari
- Assist the gift shop/groups manager with gift shop inventory, event reservations, and field trips
- Coordinate staff lunches and rotations when needed
- Other tasks as assigned
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
HR & operations manager must have the ability to:
- Walk and stand for long periods of time
- Move 30 lb objects
- Work in all weather conditions, from 0°F to over 100°F
QUALIFICATIONS
HR & operations manager must:
- Be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license
- Have a Bachelor’s degree
- HR and/or management experience is strongly preferred
- Be able to communicate clearly in written and verbal forms
- Be able to handle stressful situations calmly
- Have customer service skills
- Have great attention to detail
- Be able to work independently and as part of a team
- Have intermediate computer skills (proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Drive)
HOURS
- Full-time employment
- Salaried position
- 45-50 hours a week, 5 days a week
- Saturdays and holidays required
